As a guide only, to be eligible for private transport (conveyance) allowance:

  • Primary school students must live more than 3.2 km from the nearest state primary school
  • Secondary school students must live more than 4.8 km from the nearest state secondary school
  • Non-state school students must live more than the required distances above from both the nearest state and non-state school of the type attended.

Please note: You may not be eligible if there is a school transport bus service operating in your area. If unsure of school transport bus services in your area, please contact your local TransLink office.

It can take a number of weeks for your application to be assessed. You will be advised by mail of the outcome.

About this service

The Queensland Government provides assistance with school transport costs for eligible students travelling to and from school under the School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS).

STAS assistance is available for all government funded bus and ferry services (including TransLink and qConnect services). Assistance is also available for rail travel (City Rail and G-Link) and private vehicles travel subject to meeting specific eligibility criteria.

Detailed information on school transport assistance is provided on the Queensland Government website. This includes information on the STAS terms and conditions, applicant eligibility requirements, types of assistance that are included or excluded from the online application, and how to apply online.

Please review this information as you will be required to certify acceptance of the terms and conditions of school travel assistance to commence the online application. 

You cannot apply online if anyone on the application has a protection order in place.

General eligibility criteria

Students may be eligible for school transport assistance under certain circumstances if they:

  • have parents/guardians who are residents of Queensland
  • attend an approved school or alternative program approved by the Department of Education
  • are younger than 19 years of age

Before commencing your application  

  • Check the types of school assistance included/ excluded from the online application.
  • Review the STAS terms and conditions and eligibility requirements.
  • Ensure you have the following information to complete the online application:
    • Centrelink Pension, Healthcare or Department of Veterans Affairs concession card details for yourself and student/s (if applicable).
    • Your bank account details including BSB, account number and name, and bank address (if applying for private transport assistance).
    • Electronic document files to support claims for drought assistance and independent student status.

Code of conduct:

The Department of Transport and Main has in place a Code of Conduct for school students travelling on bus, rail or ferry. The Code applies to all students attending primary and secondary schools in Queensland who use bus, rail or ferry to travel either to and from school or for school-related activities such as excursions.

The Code sets out prescribed standards of behaviour and examples of how your child can meet these standards. You can access a copy of the Code of Conduct in the terms and conditions information section on the website.

Privacy collection notice    

The Department of Transport and Main Roads abides by the Information Privacy Act 2009.  The personal information collected will be used to assess your eligibility for subsidised travel under the authority of the Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994. Relevant information will be verified against the records of Department of Education for State school student, non-State school of attendance, and Services Australia (Centrelink and Veterans’ Affairs) where Commonwealth Government assistance details are provided. Applicant details will be provided to the contracted transport providers for the purpose of organising transport for school students. The personal information collected during this application will not be disclosed to any other third party, without your consent unless required or authorised to do so by law.

Commonwealth Government Assistance

Under the School Transport Assistance Scheme, students who receive Commonwealth Government Assistance (either directly or through their parent/guardian) may be eligible for Safety-Net assistance. Commonwealth Government Assistance details are required to assess Safety-Net eligibility for subsidised school travel by bus or ferry if distance criteria are not met. Commonwealth Government Assistance details are also required to assess Safety-Net eligibility for subsidised school travel by rail.

Cardholder certification

• The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to use Centrelink Confirmation eServices to perform a Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) enquiry to obtain my Centrelink or DVA customer and concession card status details to enable TMR to determine whether I qualify for a concession, rebate or service.
• Services Australia to provide the results of that enquiry to TMR.
I understand that:
• Services Australia will disclose personal information to TMR including my name, concession card type, customer reference number/file number, card expiry date (if relevant) to confirm my eligibility for the Queensland School Transport Assistance Scheme.
• this consent, once given, remains valid while I am a customer of TMR unless I withdraw it by notifying TMR in writing of the withdrawal of consent.
• I can get proof of my circumstances/details from Services Australia and provide it to TMR to enable my eligibility for Queensland School Transport Assistance Scheme school transport assistance to be determined.
• If I withdraw my consent or do not provide proof of my circumstances/details by alternative means, I may not be eligible for the Queensland School Transport Assistance Scheme.

Students in shared care may qualify for assistance from two residential addresses.

Shared care means the student lives with each parent/guardian and travels to and from school from two addresses. Students living in shared care and travelling on public transport (bus, rail, or ferry) can apply for STAS from both residential addresses.  There are restrictions on the payment of conveyance allowance from two addresses, please refer to the Terms and Conditions on the Queensland Government website.

To process your application, information on travel patterns for students in shared care is required. An example of a shared care travel pattern is where the student travels from your residential address to/from school one week out of every fortnight.

Student Commonwealth Government Assistance

If the parent/guardian has a concession card that includes this student, it is recommended to enter the student's customer reference number listed on the parent's concession card into the CRN/DVA reference number field. Alternatively, if the student has a Health Care concession card in their own name, select from the Assistance Type list and enter the student's customer reference number into the CRN/DVA reference number field.

Multi Trip for Private Transport

Assistance for private transport is generally only payable for one vehicle. Consideration may be given for the use of two vehicles (or one vehicle doing two trips)

Provide details of the purpose for your multiple trips, students involved, vehicle details and registration numbers. You may be requested to provide a statutory declaration confirming that two vehicles are being utilized on a full time basis.

Assistance for Drought

Drought assistance (additional conveyance allowance for private transport) is available for families who reside on a primary producing property in a drought declared shire or an individually declared primary producing property as declared by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and who drive their students to or from school or the nearest transport service (bus/rail).

Payment for private transport assistance is made by direct debit into the applicant's bank account. Account details must be in the same name as the parent/guardian or joint account including parent/guardian's name. Payment cannot be made to business or company accounts. Please notify the Department of Transport and Roads as soon as possible if these details change.
